“The Dances of Universal Peace and Zikr are an excellent way to prepare for meditation and meditation is an excellent way to prepare for the Dances of Universal Peace and Zikr.”
— Murshid Samuel Lewis

Five Days of Zikr, Dances of Universal Peace, and Meditation

Join us for five days of Silent Meditation alternating with Zikr and Dances of Universal Peace, integrating active practice with meditation, a deep and joyful experience.

This potent practice combines the power and resonance of the Zikr Circle /Dance Circle
with the profound calm and abiding insight of the meditative state. It is our goal that this integrative approach will move us toward a grounded balance of Serenity, Insight, and Awareness. The teachings and transmission of Hazrat Inayat Khan and Murshid Samuel Lewis will be woven into the context of the retreat.

Sufi Sesshin fees provide only minimal support for the teachers — there will
be an opportunity to give “dana”(further financial generosity) at the retreat.

Pir Shabda Kahn began his root training in 1969 under the guidance of the great American Sufi Master, Murshid Samuel Lewis. Since 2001, Shabda serves as the Pir (lineage holder) of the Sufi Ruhaniat International, the sufi lineage tracing back though Murshid Samuel Lewis and Pir-o-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan.

In 1972 Shabda met his second great teacher, the late Master Singer, Pandit Pran Nath, and began the daily practice of North Indian classical music in the Kirana style. He now teaches vocal music and performs Raga singing and is the director of the Chisti Sabri School of Music.

He worked closely with the great American Mystic Joe Miller.

He is also a disciple of the illustrious Tibetan Buddhist Master, the 12th Tai Situpa Rinpoche.

Shabda brings warmth, humor, and clarity in his efforts to help seekers on their Path to Awakening and Service.

Murshida Darvesha leads groups internationally in meditation, deep ecology, and the Dances of Universal Peace. She believes that if we come to know ourselves as interdependent, our caring for all beings increases; and as we come to understand contingency, we strive to create conditions which bring about peace and happiness for all life. Our practice and our life should be one. Darvesha is the Chair of the Ruhaniat Ziraat Council and the Ruhaniat Guidance Council, and President of the Board of the Dances of Universal Peace International.

Sheikh Gayan Gregory Long is an acclaimed drummer, composer, storyteller, spiritual guide, and leader of the Dances of Universal Peace. He is dedicating his life to awakening human potential through music, devotional, practices, pith teachings, and community celebration. Gayan is a direct disciple of Pir Shabda Kahn and has shared the Dances/Zikr and led retreats worldwide. His book Thunderbolts: Flashes of Insight From the Road Home is due for release in 2023. Gayan cultivates an atmosphere of enthusiasm, depth, and inclusion.

He is a medicine man with years of experience in the path of ceremonies, sacred plants, sweat lodge, sun dance, vision quest and travels with these altars.
