A young Samuel Lewis describes receiving transmission from Hazrat Inayat Khan through such a loud shout that he fell from his chair. Such is the power of living transmission. Even though these two holy beings shared just a few meetings, the strength of the transmission was such that it became the central river of Murshid SAM’s life and mission.
Pir Shabda and many of our beloved Murshids received it from Murshid SAM through just a few years of contact, and yet, it has been enough for more than 55 years of keeping the flame alive. The next generation who will carry this flame did not meet Murshid SAM or Hazrat Inayat Khan in the body, but their fires have been lit by the same transmission. Join us in this retreat, our annual Jamiat Ahm, dedicated to diving deeply into the subject of Spiritual Transmission. We will gather for shared practice, Dances of Universal Peace, meditation, contemplation, and conversation.
Enjoy the presence and light of our Pir and his special guests – some of our most talented younger teachers. We are especially calling to younger leaders, organizers, dance leaders, and Sufi teachers to come together for this gathering, to be part of this transmission and empowerment, a gathering of weaving all generations together, teaching side by side, right at the feet of Murshid SAM. Pir Shabda Kahn began his root training in 1969 under the guidance of the great American Sufi Master, Murshid Samuel Lewis. Since 2001, Shabda serves as the Pir (lineage holder) of the Sufi Ruhaniat International, the sufi lineage tracing back though Murshid Samuel Lewis and Pir-o-Murshid Hazrat Inayat Khan.
In 1972 Shabda met his second great teacher, the late Master Singer, Pandit Pran Nath, and began the daily practice of North Indian classical music in the Kirana style. He now teaches vocal music and performs Raga singing and is the director of the Chisti Sabri School of Music.
He worked closely with the great American Mystic Joe Miller.
He is also a disciple of the illustrious Tibetan Buddhist Master, the 12th Tai Situpa Rinpoche.
Shabda brings warmth, humor, and clarity in his efforts to help seekers on their Path to Awakening and Service.
Baqia Diana Lyon is a householder, mother, and social worker living in rural Pennsylvania. She serves on the Living Wisdom Council and the Board of Trustees of the Sufi Ruhaniat International. H
Arjun Jorge Calero is part of the Board of Directors of the International Network for the Dances of Universal Peace (INDUP) where he serves as Senior Mentor and is on Board of Trustees of the Sufi Ruhaniat International where he serves as Sheikh. He has taken the Dances of Universal Peace to different countries in Latin America, Middle East, North Africa and Asia, coordinating the Beyond Initiative.
He is a medicine man with years of experience in the path of ceremonies, sacred plants, sweat lodge, sun dance, vision quest and travels with these altars.
Arjun is one of the founders of Atlantida Ecovillage 20 years ago, a community where DUP trainings and all the mentioned altars are planted. He is also cofounder of the Colombian and Latin American Ecovillage Networks, and is still active in these networks as elder and vision keeper as well as organizing education for sustainability. He is a biologist, specialist in ethnobiology and ecology with a M.Sc. in ecosocial regeneration.
Khalif Maitreya Jon Stevens shares music and silence in retreats around the world, including dozens of original compositions and dances that fell directly into his heart. A devoted husband, father and school teacher, Maitreya seeks to help all purify their hearts as means to know their true nature.
