Teen Mindfulness Retreat

Mindfulness practice is a life skill, one that benefits us at any age. For teens especially, this form of compassion to oneself and the world around us can make all the difference in a typically challenging stage of development. Mindfulness and meditation relieves anxiety, provides clarity and perspective, gives us a sense of confidence in ourselves, and improves our sense of empathy for others. It is a skill that requires practice to develop, however it takes no special ability.
Join our dedicated teachers, in the breathtaking mountains, at Lama Foundation, for three days of mindfulness cultivation and practice. This is our second annual retreat for teens, focused on developing basic mindfulness techniques through exercises that focus on our whole being. Activities include (but are not limited to) seated and moving meditation, hiking, yoga, tai chi, interactive practices, communication development, and creative processes. We will enjoy evening camp fires, daily community service (seva), time for socializing, and time to rest.

Julie Tato (Taos) – A certified special education teacher, she taught in NM public schools for many years. Julie has practiced mindfulness meditation since 1988 and is an experienced teacher of meditation with an emphasis on mindfulness in daily life. She is a regular guest speaker at Taos Mountain Sangha (www.taosmountainsangha.org) and is an instructor of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (www.umassmed.edu/cfm/stress) based on the work of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Julie has been supporting meditation practices in everyday settings for many years, including with youth at Taos area charter schools and with people recovering from loss at Golden Willow Retreat Center. Julie is a member of the Lama Foundation’s board of trustees.
Gregory Weeks, MA. LPCC (Santa Fe) is a licensed professional clinical counselor in private practice in Santa Fe, NM. Gregory has been practicing mindfulness meditation since he was a resident at Lama Foundation in the early 1990’s. Having studied contemplative psychology at Naropa University and completing his masters in psychology and counseling at Southwestern College in Santa Fe, Greg had the great fortune of working with individuals in all aspects of life. As a practicing therapist, Gregory’s primary tool with his clients is mindfulness. He has witnessed success in the areas of anxiety, depression, pain management, grief and loss and general life transitions. Gregory has seen his teen clients have a great willingness to participate in meditation, and been amazed by their natural capacity to expand their consciousness by focusing and quieting their minds.
Jose Maresma (Albuquerque) has been a practicing exercise physiologist for over 26 years. In his career he has worked with top-level athletes and coaches at the US Olympic Training Center, USA Skiing, along with several professional and college sports teams. He has spent the last decade focused on wellbeing and preventative medicine. Jose turned to meditation as a foundational modality for promoting good health because of the very clear scientific evidence of health benefits. Jose is currently teaching meditation in the Presbyterian Cardiac Rehabilitation program, State of New Mexico Recovery Court program, Mindful Eating for Albuquerque Public Schools, teaching MBSR to the faculty at Sandia Preparatory School, and developing/teaching Calm and Strong, a program that integrates meditation, exercise and nutrition for optimal health and healing. He has also taught meditation to the University of New Mexico Men’s Soccer team and is a teacher at The Mindful Center, the largest provider of MBSR education in the Southwest.
Kimberlee Maresma, MA. LPCC (Albuquerque) is a licensed professional clinical counselor, and a graduate of Southwestern College in Santa Fe. She has a background in exercise physiology and holistic nutrition. In her practice as a therapist, she teaches mindfulness practices to her clients, helping them to ease anxieties and depressive traits by tuning to the present moment and slowing their reactions. She works from a holistic model looking at her clients as whole people: body, mind, and soul.
