Natural Building Apprenticeship
June 1, 2007 (Fri) - July 10, 2007 (Tues)
Cost: $1000
with Steve Kemble, Mollie Curry and
Austin Babcock

Minimum enrollment: 7 students, Max: 14 students
A six-week hands-on introduction to the wonderful world of natural building. With a focus on actual hands-on building projects and some classroom time, apprentices will be guided through several natural building methods and skills, including: straw-bale, adobe, and straw-clay walls; essential basic carpentry for door and window framing; and natural clay- and lime-based plasters. The apprenticeship also includes "Build Here Now", a one-week natural building convergence featuring cutting-edge natural building professionals from around the country. While an apprentice, you will also be a part of Lama Foundation's exciting summer community, and will be exposed to valuable community building skills from one of America's oldest intentional communities. We will work hard, learn lots and play even harder. There is much fun to be had amidst the "mud, straw and love".
This extensive natural building apprenticeship exemplifies Lama’s commitment to physical, cultural, and spiritual sustainability. We will focus on straw bale buildings, and investigate how other natural building methods work, using Lama’s existing structures as examples. Guided with ample instruction, apprentices will learn by doing: stacking and trimming bales, framing window and door openings, sculpting cob details, and plastering with earth and lime.
Essential to the apprenticeship is the everyday life in Lama Foundation ’s summer community: care for ourselves, care for each other and for Lama’s sacred land. Lama Foundation ’s high altitude and physical environment are demanding, and yet the building experience, opportunity for personal growth, off-the-grid living, and getting to know other like minded people are well worth the effort!
